Local Garage Totalled a Guy's Corvette (PICTURES).

A listener sent us a letter telling his story of taking his 1989 Corvette that he saved for since he was 8 years old. It was a 1989 because that's the year his kid was born.

The Corvette was taken to a Chili garage to put 4 new tires on it. He left, came back, and discovered that during the "test drive" of the car there was an "accident" causing the car to flip over. The car is totalled.

Should he sue the garage? We think so. Especially seeing they, allegedly, have a history of having accidents thta flip cars.

been a mechanic for 25 years, wrecked 2 cars, both accidents were caused by a teenage driver.
11/15/2011 8:46AM
The car didn't handle very good did it
11/15/2011 8:49AM
The employe should be fired and the shop sued for his acktions .

Must reputable shops will test drive a vehicles to check for any vibrations and then they normally retighten the wheel nuts.

Test Drive a Corvette
Why were they test driving this car in the first place? Ya put the tires on and move the car out of the garage to a parking spot beside the garage. No need to test drive it!!!! When the guy comes back tell him bring the car back in after 50 miles so we can check the lug nuts. I say, "Yeah sue them for the value of the car!" There is no reason for the garage folks to have done that.

Car doesn't look like a total loss
I think he shouls sue the shop, get the money and have the car repaired....

Test Corvette
No reason to test drive the car. Tell the owner ring the car back after 25 miles and we will recheck the lug nuts. I say "Hell yeah sue the garage!" they had no reason to do that.

2 sides to every story
Why does he think he needs to sue when he doesn't even know how much he will get from insurance yet? It's unfair to trash this shop when you do not have all the facts. Most of these guys are honest men trying to make a living.

He got 4 tires put on the car and a NYS Inspection. New York State states that you must drive a car before and after the inspectiton adn that after putting 4 tires on you must drive it to check for vibrations. The tech was doing what the state requires when this type of work is done to a vehicle. And just a side note I was in that shop the night it happened and this guy and his wife were sooo nice and worried about the driver and were joking about how they were going to sell the car anyway, and they were the same way at the accident site when the sherriff called them and asked them to come down. Its funny how people change when they get greedy

If it was me I would take them to court!
He shouldn't have to sue... if the shop was reputable -they would cover the cost of repairs (or their insurance company would.) If they don't he has every right to take them to court.
11/15/2011 10:25AM
The tires look good tho!!
11/15/2011 10:44AM
Not a prayer!
The test drive would be warranted if an inspection was done along with the tires. Any car shop has to take your car for a test drive before and after an inspection! No shop will ever say to "come back in 50 miles to tighten lug nuts" - so the prior comments are ludicrous! I doubt that guy was saving since he was 8 yrs old for this corvette too! Wouldn't the media have heard this story before now if the car shop had a "history of flipping cars"?? Really?!? Sounds like you don't have all the info to me!

Tire replacement requires test drive
When tires are replaced, they need to be balanced. A vehicle should always be test driven after. It was correct for the tech to test drive the car. Ending up in a ditch is driver error.

I had a similar experience.
When I called to get my '81 Corvette out of storage in May, I was told by the guy storing it that he had crashed it in February.
11/15/2011 12:16PM
dumb as speople
11/15/2011 12:21PM
sue them for the vette
I think they should be sued for the value of the car and other things as well. The employee should be fired and the garage closed down due to its history
11/15/2011 2:26PM
The owner of the vett is being so wronged
Thats just not right monro should be going above and beyond to take care of this guy I would push the issue as much as possible and I have the picture of the car upside down so of you could tell me how to uplaload it thanks guys
11/15/2011 2:43PM
An accident is just that - an accident. Does anyone know how the employee is? Injured? If it was my car I'd get a lawyer, talk to my insurance AND talk to the shop owner and driver. This could be settled without everyone taking a huge hit. Is it the shops policy to test drive a car after any work is done? All questions that need answered!
11/15/2011 6:14PM
This is my front yard! Thanks for the tip...
Moron kid took out our mailboxes and a metal post. No one left a note. Now I know who to sue.
11/15/2011 7:38PM
It's not a total loss. The garage has to have insurance to cover against just this sort of thing. Plus look at all the fame this garage is getting!!! LOL
11/15/2011 8:21PM
There is no question in my mind, he needs to sue the shop for the total value of the car and the idiot who crashed it should be fired. This would be bad if the car wasn't a classic and without sentimental value, this is beyond bad.
11/15/2011 8:31PM
I saw the car going through a red light the turn a corner sideways burnin rubber I knew somethin was goin to happen
11/15/2011 9:26PM
test drive is a must
after service a test drive can determine if all wheels are tight or if tires were balanced properly. Other wise the customer may have a complaint. Its not not like pushing papers to a done file.
11/15/2011 10:55PM
Not worth anything anyways
It's not worth to much maybe 8. To 10 thousand and Kimberly a mustang is a poor mans corvette I have a black convertible corvette all black interior outside and top
11/16/2011 6:50AM
I think Ray should go on Ebay and find another one that is as close to the same shape and same miles and reguardless of where it is they should send him out there and have him look at it and pay for the car as well as all his expencies.
11/16/2011 2:48PM
I think a shop should have to request the owners consent to "test drive" their car. By all means the dealership and the employee should be personally and financially responsible. I hope he gets enough money to buy a brand spankin new Corvette
11/16/2011 8:34PM
Car really isnt worth that much.
Its worth probably between 6K-10K. Not a read desirable car.But for him it was.
11/17/2011 11:18AM
New owner of garage coming soon!
Obviously the person who currently owns this garage, needs not own it anymore. I hope that this man sues and gets it all and maybe someone can put his car back together. Sadly you can not trust people. My sister has a Saturn Sky she keeps track of the milage and sure enough someone took it for a joy ride. Put 100 miles on the car! Also ended up breaking the dash board. Cars should be made like back in the day when you could fix it yourself!
11/20/2011 12:24PM
@ Not a prayer
You're wrong about shops not telling you to come back in 50-75 miles to have the lugs nuts retorqued. EVERY shop tells you that IF you have alloy rims, as so many cars do these days.
