Holliday Inn Fire, Greece, NY
As a volunteer fireman with the Greece-Ridge fire department during the time of this devastating fire there were always questions in my mind and others within the department as to why so conveniently and supposedly coincidentally,
"Bud" Phillips just happened onto the scene at such an early hour on a Sunday Morning. It gratifies me knowing that this question that has played itself over and over in my mind over the past 30 plus years is finally getting some high profile attention. It is also reassuring to know that the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation. although I have some renewed faith in the Greece Police Dept. under the watch of Chief Baxter, I cant help but wonder if perhaps "Bud" Phillips was given a "pass" as a part of the "good ol' boy" club that was so prevelent under the past Greece police and town government regines. In my oppinion, the Sheriff's Office should have been called upon to conduct the orriginal investigation to segregate the local police involvement and politics. I sincerely hope that the Greece Police, Sheriff's Office, ATF and State Police agencies can work collectively together to bring this horrific crime to a closure.
Holliday Inn Fire
A statement from Bud Phillips stated the following:
Reporter: “We have an email that says that you were calling it an accident yet the official record says it was an arson. Why the discrepancy?”
Phillips: “That's the reason we haven't talked about it since '78. We disagree with the findings of the police department from 1978.”
My question to Bud, who from Greece Ridge Fire Department did a investigation? What training did they have in fire investigation? And since I was in the department for many years, I thought it was always the police or outside group that investigated fires in Greece. Bud, who are the "WE" that thought it was an accident? As a Fire Chief, you would think a Chief would keep all options open. So Bud, who are the we?????
